Rain Returns to Wei Village

Wei shui han jian luo

Kan ren yi wei shao.

Rain Returns to Wei Village
Frozen Wei River levels are dropping
Many cattails and millet sprouts are together.
Enjoy leisure next to the sandy riverbanks
Watching people cut and gather the reeds and sweet potatoes.
Near the water, cold and lonely wind and shadows
Solitude increases with the bright sunlight.
Again the sunset shadows arise
Open country thoughts more desolate and bleak.
Go back alone on the desolate and bleak road
Sunset rain dampens the village bridge.
Notes:
Wei River: Largest tributary to the Yellow River. It ran through the ancient capital city of Chang’an (now Xi’an).
