Home-coming

He Zhizhang

(Ⅰ)

I left home young and not till old do I come back,

Unchanged my accent, my hair no longer black.

The children whom I meet do not know who am I,

“Where do you come from, sir?” they ask with beaming eye.

(Ⅱ)

Since I left my homeland so many years have passed;

So much has faded away and so little can last.

Only in Mirror Lake before my oldened door

The vernal wind still ripples waves now as before.

The old poet sighs for his changed look and the unchanged Mirror Lake.

Two Poems on ”Home-coming” is a poem written by He Zhizhang, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, in his later years when he was returning to his hometown after resigning from his official position. The first poem expresses the poet’s sadness of being a long-time visitor to his hometown, while at the same time expressing his affectionate feeling of returning to his hometown after a long absence; the second poem captures the contrast between the changes and changes in his hometown, revealing the poet’s feelings of sadness and helplessness about the changes in life, the vicissitudes of the years, and the changes in things and people. The language of these two poems is simple and unpretentious, and the feelings are natural and realistic, full of life’s interest.
