Gave This Souvenir At the Departure of Several New Friends to the Capital

My path not in the right or suitable place
Driving a simple cart, go back again towards the east to Luoyang.
The host opens up an old guest room
Guests leave to get drunk in Xin Feng.

Green trees surround the hot springs
Dust obscures a red sun late in the day.
Shake off my dusty clothes, then depart
Lighten my steps, follow the way up into the tall Hua and Song mountains.

Notes:

Xin Feng: An area east of the capital Chang’an famous for its hot springs. Emperors and their retinues often visited here during the colder months of the year.

Mt. Hua:  Located east of the capital Chang’an in Shaanxi Province. It is the western most of the Five Great Mountains of China. Many Daoist temples are on the slopes and peaks.

Mt. Song:  Located in Henan Province on the southern banks of the Yellow River. It too is one of the Five Great Mountains of China. Noted for its blend of both Daoist and Buddhist temples and monasteries. The birthplace of Zen Buddhism, and the Shaolin Temple is located in the area.
