Back to him,
exquisite, graceful, coy
she stands there
pretending.
Plum pistils roll between her palms,
the petals tap her shoulder.
She has meant to tell her lover how much she detests partings;
and yet, here he is, and she–.
Grief strangely quiets.
The clouds are untroubled,
the waters, edgeless;
a sound of flute locks emptiness to the room.
When can these two drift as one
with the spring moon
in flood–
A leaf of a boat
between steep banks
of drooping willows?
