Ode to the Autumn Breeze

Liu Yuxi

Gone with yellow chrysanthemums last year,

You come back when cicada’s song I hear.

Your soughing wakes me from dreams at midnight,

A year’s wrinkles are seen in mirror bright.

Steeds missing frontier grass with bristles rise;

Eagles longing for clouds open sleepy eyes.

I’ll gaze my fill into the boundless sky;

Though ill, for you I’ll mount the tower high.

The poet shows his spirit to go higher and see farther in the melancholy season.

The First Hearing of the Autumn Breeze” is a seven-line poem written by Liu Yuxi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The first couplet of this poem is the poet’s endorsement of the autumn breeze. In the first couplet, the poet anthropomorphizes the autumn breeze, and the dialogue between the poet and the breeze closely follows the poem’s title and reflects that the breeze and the poet are old friends and that the breeze has great affection for the poet. In the middle two lines, the poet makes a turn from advocating for the autumn breeze to writing about what the poet has heard, seen and thought. The last couplet is the poet’s reply to the autumn breeze. The poem starts with the poet’s conversation with the autumn breeze, and then the poet’s words to the breeze, expressing the poet’s love for autumn in a subtle and charming way.
