The original pictograph for （ ） showed rain pouring down from clouds at a high altitude. As inscribed on the oracle bones, the horizontal stroke indicates the clouds, and the six short lines hanging down indicate the raindrops. Later, another horizontal stroke was added above, most probably to indicate the “sky”.
