Song of The Gold-Inlaid Sward
Lu You

Mine is a sword with gold inlaid,
With a hilt of white jade,
That through the window sheds its light
Into the dark, dark night.
I, a man with fifty years gone,
No feats of arms accomplished,
Sword in hand I stand alone
And look around me far ahead.
At the capital, my friends—
—First-water men everyone—
Pledged to chivalry and sworn
In life and death never to swerve,
Deem it a shame to leave no name
In the chronicles of history.
And single-hearted in loyalty,
We’re set our Sovereign to serve.
I’ve been with the Army of late
From the banks of River Han,
Where th’ morning snow of Mt. Zhongnan
Transforms the ranges into jade.
Alas! “If only three households
Were all that’s left of the Chu State,
Still it would be Chu that’ll vanquish
The now powerful State of Qin!”
So now, how could it be said,
That our noble Central Nation
Is left without courageous men?
