Spring Night Bamboo Pavilion: Send As a Gift to Qian Qi, Returning to His Native Lantian

Night silent and calm, all living things at rest
Every so often one hears the howling of large dogs from out of the forest.
Makes me remember my time in these mountains
Across the western canyon, houses in the distance.
Admire your preparations for tomorrow’s departure: gather fern leaves for simple meals
Travel light and comfortable, with a plain hat and no entourage.

Notes:

Lantian: A prefecture in the Southern Mountains, near the capital Chang’an.
Vacation home of, and often used as a place of rural seclusion by Wang Wei.
